Last Min. Fantasy Football

Friday, September 11th, 2009

I decided at the last minute to start up the LaB fantasy football league again.    This would be our 3rd year. (didn’t play last year)  My mother is the defending Champ with the Centennial Broncos.

Champ gets a personalized LaB FF trophy.

Since we are out of time for getting the teams together, there will be no live draft.   Draft order will be random and players will be auto-selected by the computer.   You can still prepare a list of wanted players and the cpu will draft from top of the list and from available players.

12 team max with 5-6 slots still open.  If you are interested, please follow me on Twitter @frankfrisina and send me a direct message for your invite.    Draft will be tomorrow at 5pm EST.   So time is running out!  Get in on the fun times!

The Gap Concept In Poker

Poker is one of the most fun and equally frustrating games you can play. No matter how long you have been a poker player, you can always learn new strategies and tips to help you win some money. Poker is everywhere now from casinos to online free poker, so it pays to learn poker rules and tips to help you along. All it takes is a little persistence and you can become a master poker player before you know it. With a combination of mathematics, acting, and sheer luck poker is one of the best games of chance and skill that you can play.

There are different kinds of poker to play. There’s Texas Hold ‘em, five card stud, seven card stud and five card draw just to name a few. The winning hands stay the same no matter what game you are playing. The point is to get a better hand than your opponents. If you don’t have the better hand and you know it then you can bluff. This means making the other players thinking you have a better hand than them even if you don’t. Be careful with betting on bluffs though because it doesn’t always work. Watch some poker tournaments to see how to successfully bluff your opponent. Bluffing becomes a kind of game in itself.

The gap concept is hard to explain but easy to understand. It is a term that was first coined by poker player David Sklansky. It refers to the concept that you need a strong hand to call a raise from the players in front of you than to make an original raise. In other words, if no one has raised the pot yet and you have a semi-strong hand you can raise and hope everyone else calls. Depending on how they react to your initial raise is how you should plan your action. If another player raises significantly and you aren’t confident in your hand you should fold. Always take the time to think before you act. Too many people try to be quick and end up hurting themselves more than helping. It takes some thought to make a smart choice in poker.

The gap part comes in when there are players ahead of you that raise. Say you didn’t get the initial raise and someone else did. The gap refers to the players around you that call the raise that you have to beat. You can call, raise, or fold depending on the confidence you have in your hand. You can always bluff if you think you are good enough to fool your competition, but watch how much you are putting in the pot or you could be out a lot of money. It’s easier to put into play than to put into words. It really comes down to the confidence you have in your hand. If you think it can beat the other players’ hands then you can make it work. Or you can make them believe their hand isn’t as strong as yours (bluffing).

Winning hands are listed from highest possible winning hand to lowest possible winning hand:

  • Royal Flush
  • Straight Flush
  • Four of a Kind
  • Full House
  • Flush
  • Straight
  • Three of a Kind
  • Two Pair
  • One Pair
  • High Card

If two players have the same winning hand the player with the highest value of the winning hand wins. For instance if two players each have one pair and player one has a pair of tens and player two has a pair of queens then player two wins. This applies to all instances of matching winning hands.

Whether you are a veteran poker player or a beginner you can never learn enough tips and strategies to help you along. Even the best master poker player can continue to learn things. The game of poker evolves just as every game does and in order to be the best or get on the road to become the best you need to continue to learn all the angles there are. Perhaps if  you aren’t already you can soon call yourself a master poker player. All it takes is determination and education. Anyone can be a master poker player and win big if they want to.
