Poker Tactics
Monday, November 30th, 2009If you want to be successful playing poker online, you will need to have a repertoire of poker tactics that you can use to extract chips from your opponents. Below are some of the most common poker tactics used in online poker rooms by experienced Texas Holdem poker players.
Bluffing
Poker bluffing is one of the most important parts of any Texas Holdem game. It doesn’t matter if you are playing in poker tournaments or in a ring game, bluffing is very prevalent. Poker bluffing is basically representing a hand that you don’t have hoping that you can get an opposing player with a stronger hand to fold. This is an essential part of any poker strategy, but takes some experience to pull it off consistently.
Slow Playing
Slow playing is one of the poker tactics players use to disguise a big hand. Many poker players are afraid that they will not get maximum value out of their big hands like pocket aces and kings, so they bet small and play very passive, trying to keep as many people in the hand as possible. This builds a pretty big pot, but there is a very big risk that you will get drawn out on by the river and you will eventually lose the pot. You have to really know the players you are playing with and their tendencies to pull off a successful slow play. But, when it does work, you can make a lot of money!
Check Raising
Check raising is a way of tricking another player into thinking they have the strongest hand and putting in a bet, then coming over the top of them and trying to steal the pot. This is relatively common in online poker rooms and other poker sites. Check raising is not really that dangerous when playing Texas Holdem, because it is a short term play, and if it doesn’t work, you can always fold.
Short Stack Play
Short stack play is something that a lot of amateurs use when playing poker online. The premise is this: since the player using this strategy is weak post flop, they want to force their opponents to make a decision and take the risk. So, what they do is they wait until they get a strong hand and push all in pre flop. Since they are all in, they cannot make any post flop decisions, and the opposing player has to make the decision for a large portion for a lot of his chips. Many players find this tactic cowardly and unsportsmanlike, but it does work.
It is important to learn these tactics and incorporate them into your poker strategy. It will make you a better player, and in the long run, you will win more money. Who doesn’t want that?
